We found that a satirical article edited with unrelated old pictures has been circulated on social media with a false claim that the International news organization CNN has praised the Taliban for wearing masks during attacks.
A video of a man threatening to kill an employee of a power supply company is viral on social media with the claim that the incident took place in India. That person is describing himself as Mufti Ata ur Rehman Swati. In the video, he can be seen threatening the employee who had come to fix the meter problem.
The man in the video is not allowing the electricity worker to do his work. At the same time, he is threatening that either he will kill him or he himself will die. The video is being viral on social media with a claim that the incident took place in India. Not only this, while sharing the video, some people have also targeted people of a particular religion.
A Facebook user name Hindu Vikram Panchal share a post with the caption "I will steal electricity! I will not agree!! I will die or I will kill. This Taliban is being born within the country itself.
In our investigation, we found that the viral claim is misleading. This video is from Pakistan’s Karachi and is more than a year old.
After doing reverse image research using related keyframes of the video, we found the same video uploaded on the official Twitter handle of K-Electric Ltd, a Karachi-based electric supply company, on July 27, 2020.
The tweet explains how the man was caught red-handed on charges of theft of electricity. With the help of appropriate keywords in Urdu and English, we also found the same video reports and screenshots carried by the Pakistan-based media outlets and social media handles in 2020. The official Facebook page of the 'Army News' channel in Pakistan also uploaded the video on August 28, 2020.
In conclusion, a video from July 2020 from Pakistan was shared with a false claim that an Indian Muslim man threatening to kill an electric company employee as he’s trying to restore a meter.
